St. Mary Parish retained KKC to update its plan and to expand upon and integrate the zoning ordinance into a Unified Development Code. KKC worked to improve the overall organizational structure and improve consistency in the Parish’s development codes. The new UDC expands the current ordinance to better preserve sensitive resources and open spaces, make allowance for Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND), permit planned developments as a by-right option, and integrate incentives for achieving and preserving community character. The update of the plan works toward the goal of setting the future course of the Parish to improve quality of life and to posture the Parish to accomplish its economic development goals. The plan serves to manage development and redevelopment, make fiscally responsible infrastructure investments, enhance and preserve the natural resources and recreation system, and provide tourism-based economic opportunities. Most critically, the plan directs investment and reinvestment initiatives specifically guided to revitalization and enhancement of the Parish economy.
