Recognition and reinforcement of a community’s unique character often involves identifying and preserving its historic resources.

Some communities do not have an established historic preservation program and are at the beginning of considering how to protect a small number of historic buildings or sites. In such cases, the local government may need assistance crafting a historic preservation ordinance that provides some protection without reaching beyond local capabilities and sensitivities.

Other communities have a well-established historic preservation program and may seek more specific assistance in refining their strategies and tools. For all communities interested in long-range and strategic planning for their historic resources, a historic preservation plan provides a comprehensive look at the existing program, tools, partners and funding sources for preservation.

KKC has experience working with jurisdictions across the U.S. to facilitate and implement comprehensive historic preservation plans. KKC can also work with a community to enhance existing or create new historic preservation tools such as design guidelines and standards that seek to preserve the character, and often the details, of historic resources. Once the tools are in place to protect a community’s historic resources, KKC can continue with staff into the implementation phase. This often comes in the form of assisting with the review of Certificate of Appropriateness applications submitted to the community’s Historic Preservation Commission or Board.
